MIAA denies smartwatch theft claim

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) backed a CCTV footage refuting an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) family’s recent theft claim against them.

In the footage posted by DWIZ 882 AM reporter Raoul Esperas and retweeted by the Office for Transportation Security (OTS), a male passenger in a black shirt lost his watch after it underwent baggage inspection at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2.

However, a female staff found the watch on the floor and returned it to the OFW family within three minutes.

Jorge Hizon, claiming to be a relative of the OFW family who owned the watch, earlier posted on Facebook that a male inspector stole the smartwatch and had it returned after 30 minutes.

“It took my sister 30 minutes arguing with the x-ray inspector until she became hysterical that all other passengers saw and heard the commotion. My sister demanded that the male inspector who told Aries (the male passenger) to take off his watch to come back to answer all her questions,” he said.

MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal said the OTS screeners were only doing their jobs and that the Facebook post tainted the airport’s image.

“Walang basis ho iyong pagkeclaim na ganoon nangyari. Eh, let’s not be unfair naman sa amin. Para naman kaming binubugbog na nakadapa na, aapakan pa,” 24 Oras quoted Monreal as saying.
