Pinoys in Sharjah celebrate discount in fines, cancellation of black points

Days after the Sharjah Police announced that it will waive black points in driver’s licenses and offer a 50 percent discount on fines, motorists flocked to the Police department, eager to immediately seize the opportunity.

However, officials explained that the reduction in fines and the cancellation of black points will be available until year-end.

Payments could be made through the Ministry of Interior (MoI) application, and about 5.3 million black points have been automatically waived.

However, those who have acquired black points through serious traffic violations may be required to approach the nearest police station.

The offer, which marks Sharjah Police’s golden jubilee, delighted numerous motorists, including Filipinos who live in Sharjah.

“Malaking bagay ito dahil talagang mahal ang mga traffic fines dito sa UAE. At least [ngayon], kahit papaano may discount,” Mark Louie Sandoval, a Sharjah resident, told The Filipino Times in an online interview.

Fellow Sharjah motorist, Michael Espiritu, agreed that fines in Sharjah cost a lot, saying that, “Ang beating the red light lang Dh2500 na agad yun, kaya kung may discount, mabuti lalo na [para sa]  mga may malalaking fine na naipon.”

Fines for traffic violations across the UAE may range from Dh100 to Dh3000 depending on the violation.

Another Sharjah resident, Christopher Reyes, also admittedly accumulated a number of fines. “Masaya [ako] dahil may fine din [akong] di nababayaran hanggang ngayon,” he said when TFT asked about his reaction regarding the discount.
