Marcoses will return gold bars, portions of hidden wealth — President Duterte

President Rodrigo Duterte announced the Marcos family will return their gold bars and portion of their alleged hidden wealth after years of legal battle between them and the government.

“The Marcoses sabi nila they will open everything and probably return maybe yung nakita lang. Sabi nila, ‘We are ready to open and bring back pati a few gold bars.’ Sabi nila, ‘It’s just a few but sabi nila isauli nila,” Duterte said in his speech at the Malacanang today.

The president did not indicate the spokesperson’s name of the Marcos family or how much of the wealth would be returned to the government.

Duterte also said that he will accept whatever reason the Marcoses have for keeping the gold bars and their wealth.

“I will accept the explanation whether or not it is true kasi wala na e. They are ready to return,”

The Marcos family’s emissary stated that former dictator Ferdinand Marcos kept the gold bars and wealth because he was trying to secure the Philippine economy.

The negotiators would be composed of a former chief justice, a certified public accountant, and a third official who is unaffiliated with any party involved, Duterte said.

The Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG), the agency tasked in recovering the ill-gotten wealth of former President Marcos, recovered P170.7 billion or AED 12.28 Million from the family for 30 years.

Currently, the government is pursuing 248 cases against the Marcoses and their alleged cronies in various courts, with some pending appeals before the Supreme Court, ABS-CBN News has reported.

Duterte previously threatened to abolish the PCGG as part of a bigger proposal in downsizing the executive branch, Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno disclosed.
