DUBAI: Ultimate Junkies, an ultimate sports club composed of both veteran and beginner players who share a common interest for field-based sports, cross training and frisbee discs, has just recently wrapped up their 5th Ultimate Junkies League Tournament.
For those new to the game, Ultimate Frisbee is a sport based on teamwork and played with two teams on both sides of a field with the goal of getting the disc to the opponents’ end zone. The league started early June after drafting players from both inside and outside the club, then dividing them into five teams. The league was held at Zabeel Park, happening 7:30pm to 10pm, every Monday.
The games during the next two months were steady people were having a great time while developing their team’s rhythm, strengths and techniques. In the third month, the teams started playing more seriously as the placement for the finals’ game hanged in the balance.
Fast forward to August 26 – the day of the championship game. You could feel each of the teams’ funfilled spirits as they practiced their own sets of warm ups and drills.
Once the semifinals began, the pressure to win became even more evident with all the teams playing hard defense and scoring point after point. After the semis, the two teams who would clash for the championship boiled down to Blue Team and Pink Team.
During their match, Pink Team managed to get an early lead with their long pass plays but Blue Team was catching up and managed to close the gap with their steady plays. At the last couple of minutes, Pink Team scored two more times with a risky play and secured their victory.
During the last huddle everyone congratulated each other on another successful league and headed out to the after game party and awarding ceremony for more celebration.
