Folayang eyes ONE lightweight title in Singapore

MANILA: Filipino mixed martial arts fighter Eduard Folayang aims for the ONE lightweight title ahead of his battles with the defending champion Shinya Aoki of Japan on November 11 at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.

Folayang, 32, is coming off two impressive victories this year. He dominated a highly touted fighter in Adrian Pang in his last fight and currently feels at the prime of his career, reported GMA News.

“I am at the peak of my abilities as a fighter. All the hard work I have put into training has finally started to pay off and I am challenging the great champion Aoki,” Folayang (16-5) reportedly said.

“It will be an honor to share the cage with him, but I feel I have the skills to pull off an upset. I will fight for the honor of my country and the people of the Philippines who will be in my corner on fight night.”

Aoki, meanwhile, is riding a nine-fight win streak and is a highly renowned ground game specialist. He holds a record of 39-6 (25 wins by submission), and has nothing but praises for Folayang before the championship fight, the report said.

“I have been in the sport for many years and have fought the toughest challengers across the world, but this is the first time I will be fighting a strong Filipino warrior,” GMA News quoted Aoki as saying.

“I am excited to test my skills against a fighter representing the Philippines. Eduard Folayang is a great competitor with solid all-around skills. It should be an exciting match-up.”
