PHIVOLCS raises Mayon Volcano alert status to 3

Last January 14, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has raised the alert status of Mayon Volcano to Alert Level 3 from its Alert Level 2 the earlier day.

“For the past 24 hours, Mayon Volcano in Albay province has noticeably increased its unrest. After three phreatic eruptions and 158 rockfall events between 4:21 p.m. (January 13) and 7:25 p.m. (January 14), Mayon’s summit crater is now exhibiting bright crater glow that signifies the growth of a new lava dome and beginnings of lava flow towards the southern slopes. PHIVOLCS said in an advisory.

PHIVOLCS also warned the possibility of “hazardous eruptions” that may occur “within the forthcoming days or weeks” due to the continual flow of molten rocks from the volcano’s crater.

In earlier reports, Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council ordered the evacuation of residents inside and within the volcano’s six-kilometer permanent danger zone. Located in this areas are the villages of Anoling, Quirangay, Sua, Tumpa, Tinubran Camalig; Tandarora, Maninila, all in the municipality of Guinobatan; Miisi, Budiao, Banadero, Matnog of the municipality of Daraga; barangays Calbayog and Canaway, Malilipot; Buang Buhian and Magapo of Tabaco City ; Baligang and Amtic in Ligao City.
