Asian maid cleared of stealing employer’s jewelry in Dubai

The Filipina maid in Dubai who was accused of stealing her employer’s diamond necklace had been cleared of the charge by the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday, October 18.

In a Gulf News report by Bassam Za’za’, the American employer claimed the Filipina stole her Dh5,000-worth necklace, among other valuables, after the former found her lost jewelry worn by the latter in a photo posted on Facebook.

According to the employer, the maid ran away from work in March 2016.

After the employer discovered her photo on Facebook ‘wearing her necklace’, she reported it to authorities.

The Filipina, 28, was arrested in July of this year and pleaded not guilty to stealing the necklace and a bracelet worth Dh3,700 and Dh600 respectively, and a perfume worth Dh600.

“I did not steal anything from them … they asked me if I wanted to stay working for them, but when I told them no and asked them to fly me back home … they got angry and decided to complain. I didn’t take anything,” the report quoted the maid’s testimony in court.

She claimed she purchased the necklace from a jewelry store.

She was acquitted by the court due to “lack of corroborated evidence”.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 12 days.
