Traffic violations triple two days after speed limit reduction

Traffic violations reached 1,400 last Monday, Oct 16, two days after the speed limit cut in Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road, police told the media.

Over 1,018 drivers were caught overspeeding on the first day, and on the second day, over 1,424 fines were issued on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and 924 were issued in Emirates Road, The National quoted Brigadier Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the Dubai traffic police.

Previously, speed violations recorded everyday reached less than 400, the National reported.

On Sunday, Oct. 15., the speed limit in Dubai’s two major roads were reduced from 120kph to 110kph, and the ‘buffer’ limit lowered from 140kph to 130kph.

The Dubai traffic police has installed 60 speed-control devices and radars, deployed eight traffic patrols, and new signboards to inform drivers of the new speed limits.

Most of those fined for overspeeding complained that they were not aware of the reduced speed limits, Al Mazrouei told the National.

“Those who still drive at the same speed limit as before the recent reduction do not follow news by media or social media platforms and they do not pay attention to signboards on the road. This is a negative attitude and they should be held responsible for it,” the National quoted Al Mazrouei.
