A New Zealander businessman based in Cagayan De Oro is facing charges for illegally detaining two minors inside his home after an informant claimed he was taking pictures of the children and sending them to other men online.
Authorities on Thursday, September 14, identified the suspect as Kane Andrews, 67, owner of a home improvement company.
According to police reports, a woman, Annie (not her real name), came forward with the information after escaping from Andrews and his wife, Jezelle.
Jezelle and another Filipina was arrested with Andrews. They are also being charged for “willfully, unlawfully, feloniously, and knowingly kidnapping, detaining, and depriving the liberty” of two children, aged four and six, Sun Star Cagayan De Oro reported.
Based on her testimony, Annie said she had romantic relations with the suspect and was living in his home together with his wife.
Annie added that Andrews instructed her to go back home to her hometown in Bayawan, Negros Oriental, to look for children to “adopt”. Upon her return, Annie brought two children, aged four and six.
The couple was already living with Jezelle’s niece, who was left under her care by her cousin, who left the country to work in Dubai.
According to investigators, the children were kept inside the house and allegedly photographed to be viewed by other men online.
Annie narrated how she met Andrews in an online dating site in 2015 and formed a romantic relationship with him. But at the same time, the businessman entered another relationship and got married to Jezelle instead of her.
The minors are now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Complaints against Andrews and the two Filipinas have been filed at a family court, the report quoted Maritime Police Statio Chief Inspector Pedro Gorre Jr. as saying.
