Filipino dancers bag 6 gold medals in int’l dance tilt

A group of Filipino student-dancers brought glory to the Philippines after garnering several top awards at the Hong Kong Challenge Cup Dance Competition held at the Y Theater in Chai Wan, Hong Kong.

The contingent, composed of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Dance Majors and members of the Saint Benilde Romançon Dance Company, bagged the Overall Best Dance Performance Award, along with five gold medals and one silver.

A dance interpretation of “Little Swans” by student-dancers Louis Laylo, Ghian Red Arboleda, Jaydee Jasa, and Mark Juelar was awared Overall Best Dance Performance.

“Little Swans” tells the story of four babies who wake up without their mother. The performance was guided by Benilde Dance Chairman Christine Crame.

Gold medalists for the event include Michael Patrick de la Torre for Track, the pair of Jaydee Jasa and Mark Juelar for Brothers, and the pair of Nicole Gutierrez and Ralph Nuguid for Jaded.

De la Torre’s performance was assisted by Trainer Cir Garing while the pair of Jasa and Juelar was mentored by Crame.

Martha Lelis bagged a silver medal for her Sayah Adalah, with the choreography of fellow dance student Tonjie Mangao.

This year’s Hong Kong Dance Challenge Cup saw 1,200 contestants from 600 teams competing for the coveted awards. The competing teams came from seven different countries namely The Philippines, Malaysia, Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea.

Participants who garnered a score of 90 points and above from the judges will receive a gold medal while a score of 85 to 89 will merit silver medal and 80 to 84 points will merit bronze medal.
