Dubai Court suspends jail term for woman accused of bra theft

by | News

An appeal court in Dubai overturned the primary judgment of three months imprisonment and deportation of an Italian woman after accusation of stealing a bra.

Presiding judge Adnan Al Farra cited grounds of leniency after defense lawyer Faisal Al Zarouni convinced the Dubai Appeal Court that his client had no intentions of stealing the bra worth Dh270, according to a Gulf News report.

“The surveillance camera footage clearly showed my client leaving the store with the bra on her shoulder. She did not try to hide it,” Al Zarouni said. “This evidently proves that she did not have any intention to steal the bra. The CCTV footage of the other stores also showed that the bra was still on my client’s shoulder.”

The store’s security guard reported to the police that the bra had disappeared after the woman walked into the fitting room, which, according to local report, was later found hidden in the woman’s bag.

Earlier this year, the same defense lawyer helped a Filipina saleslady clear her name after being accused of stealing four bras amounting Dh200.

Al Zarouni convinced the Court that the 29-year-old Filipina was tricked by her boss to confess to the crime or she will lose her job.

The lawyer was able to overturn the initial sentence of three-month imprisonment. Deportation charge against the Filipina was also revoked.
