Ivanka Trump prepares rare-Pinoy finger food

Ivanka Trump, US President Donald Trump’s eldest daughter, has not been in the Philippines, but it seems like the Filipino culture has already made a mark in her.

During the sixth birthday party of her daughter, Arabella Kushner, Ivanka posted photos and videos to her Instagram account, which surprised netizens, not because it was a lavish celebration, but because of seemingly rare dish in the party.

Ivanka served a hotdog skewed with marshmallow, a usual “handa” in a Filipino children’s party.

Aside from the marshmallow and hotdog, Ivanka also posted a photo of spaghetti captioned “birthday tradition–noodles for a long life!”

While Filipino netizens were reminded of their childhood parties and the belief that eating pansit on birthdays will result in longer life, other nationalities questioned the family’s “weird food preference”.

According to Natalia Roxas, co-founder of Filipino Kitchen, this is because the hotdogs in the US taste different from the Filipino flavor.

“Filipino hotdogs are like fire engine red. They are saltier than the hotdogs we know in the states. Our marshmallow is made sweeter, so it gives you a salty-sweet dynamic,” she said.
