OFWs warned vs sex out of wedlock

Illegal affairs and sex out of wedlock remain as top issues of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) community in the UAE, a legal consultant said.

Most Filipinos, who seek legal advice on sex out of wedlock charges, are from the UAE, according to Attorney Barney Almazar, a licensed legal consultant in the UAE and a partner at Gulf Law.

“They are perhaps unaware that there are things we can do in the Philippines that we cannot do here since there are differences in the Philippines and UAE laws,” Gulf News quoted Almazar as saying.

Almazar called on Filipino couples who are both single to get married before engaging in a sexual intercourse.

Filipinos in extramarital relationships should also “end relationships properly” to be legally allowed to marry again.

“It is not just complying with the law, it is also being fair to the other partner,” Almazar said.
Consul-General Raymund Cortes reminded OFWs that sex out of wedlock is punishable by three to six months imprisonment and deportation.

A Filipino couple was sentenced to three months in jail in April and currently faces deportation for allegedly having sex out of wedlock.

The couple is currently trying to overturn their conviction, claiming they are married.
