Priest in Marawi still alive, says military

The Catholic priest taken hostage by Maute militants in Marawi City remains alive as fighting between government forces and rebels resumed Monday after an 8-hour pause during the Muslim holiday of Eid Al Fitr, according to the military.

Father Teresito “Chito” Suganob was seen alive Sunday in a part of the city still in the hands of the rebels, military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jo-Ar Herrera said, reports the Inquirer.net.

Civilians who were rescued from the battle zone saw the priest, Herrera said.

The health condition of Suganob is unknown, according to the spokesman.

An estimated 100 civilians are being held captive by Maute rebels, who reportedly use them as human shields.
