The secret to a good night sleep

Taking a shower has been a part of daily routine. Showers signal time to be energized and get ready for a long day.

But a study shows that taking a shower can also boost healthy sleeping habit. A study by researchers from Kyushu Institute of Design’s Department of Ergonomics said showers are best taken at night because it leads to better quality sleep.

The study said night showers, including those who do foot bath before bedtime, fall asleep faster than their morning counterparts.

“[The study] suggest that both bathing [and footbathing] before sleeping facilitates earlier sleep onset. A hot footbath is recommended for the handicapped and elderly who are unable to enjoy regular baths easily and safely,” the authors said.

Dr. Dianna Augelli of the Center for Sleep and Medicine at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, said taking a shower at night conditions the body for sleeping.

“You don’t want to heat yourself up right before bed. Cooling down is a signal that tells us we’re supposed to go to sleep,” Augelli told TIME.
