Summer sends fish prices soaring in Abu Dhabi

The summer heat led to a surge in fish prices at Abu Dhabi markets due to poor catch by fishermen of many species which are driven deeper into the sea because of the hot weather.

This, in turn, results to decrease of fish supply in the market. Vendors at Mina Fish Market said that prices might soon hit record high prices in the coming days.

“We used to get four kilos of sardine for Dh10. Now, we are getting it for Dh40 or more. And we sell it for Dh15-20,” vendor Hidayath VP was quoted saying by Khaleej Times.

“Hamour was Dh35 in May and Dh40 in June, is now being sold between Dh60 to Dh70,” he added.

Inflated prices and limited selection are typical in summer. While supply is less, vendors say that the prices will stay high until September or October.
