Top 5 most frequently-asked questions during job interview

Are you looking for a new job in the UAE?

A job interview is an essential part of the hiring process. For the employers, it will be their chance to judge an applicant’s possible contribution to the company, while for applicants, it is the time for them to leave a good impression.

Job seekers need to prepare for this as it can either make or break their chances of landing an international career. However, remember that there is no such thing as a “perfect interview.” Each and every applicant has his/her own way of dealing with their interviewer’s questions. But the most important character to impress employers is eloquence in conveying your message.

Here are the top 5 frequently asked questions during an interview and how to ideally answer them:

  1.       Tell me something about yourself

It is best to start with your personal information first, followed by your educational or work background, then your qualities and qualifications. You can add also add your hobbies and other non-work related information if the interviewer asked you.

  1.       Why should we hire you?

Red flag: employers do not like cocky applicants with an ‘I-can-do-anything’ attitude. When this question is asked, give specific details. Let the interviewer know that you are the best candidate by telling your goals and visions for you as an employee and for the company as well.

  1.       What are your strengths and weaknesses?

You have to emphasize your experience and qualifications which are directly related to the work you are applying for. As for your weaknesses, any interviewer knows that you can’t do everything. There will be things that you will not be good at. Regardless, express your willingness to learn and grow with them.

  1.       How do you see yourself in 2, 5, or 10 years?

An employer does not want an employee who will leave after a few months of working. They would like someone who will stay for a long time. Your answer to this question will show if you are willing to stay and grow professionally in the company you are applying for.

Let your interviewer know that you are content with the position they are offering and that you are willing to develop that in the long run. You also have to show that your long-term career goal is appropriate with the company’s own goal.

  1.       Do you have any questions?

Take note that an interview is a two-way conversation. It is not only the person behind the table who gets to ask questions. At the end of an interview, most interviewers would ask the applicant if they have any questions they would like to ask.

It is a big no-no to say none! However, you should not also ask about non-work related things, such as office gossips, and questions that you can obviously answer yourself. Rather, it is good to ask about the employer’s expectations, the day-to-day responsibilities of the position, or your chances of getting hired.

Prepare for it

It does not mean that you will get asked those five questions in every interview that you will go through.

Key to a successful job interview: even if you don’t know what the interviewer will ask you, preparation is always the key!
