‘X Factor UK’ judges in shock over Alisah Bonaobra’s elimination

Time wasn’t on her side last Sunday.

Alisah Bonaobra ended her The X Factor UK journey on Nov. 12 with a soulful performance of George Michael’s “Praying for Time” for the live shows.

Her performance, complete with a dim lit and smoky stage design, was indeed worthy of a finale.

Though expressing his confidence in Bonaobra’s ability to pull off the song, judge Simon Cowell had a point to make about the singer’s style.

“Every time you do one of these songs, it’s very old-fashioned, and that’s not why you’re here. You want to be a contemporary singer. I still don’t think you’ve nailed your version of the song yet,” he said.

Sharon Osbourne, to whose group the Filipina belonged to, came to her defense, saying, “You know what? Sometimes it’s good to be old-fashioned. What do they want you to do? Break into rap every week? You do what you do because you’re being true to the artist that you are.”

Bonaobra confirmed that she was singing her heart out in this song about poverty as she herself has experienced it, coming from a family of sidewalk vendors in Manila.

“I’m kind of emotional with this song because, like in the Philippines, we experience these kinds of issues and it’s like I just can’t stop myself from crying, but I really need to push this hard and sing this very perfect song,” she explained.

She got the least number of votes among the contestants and was booted off the competition, but she was simply grateful for the experience.

“I never thought I’d go this far, and I can’t believe I just did it. Thank you very much for all your support,” she said.
