‘Birdshot’ is PH’s entry to Oscars 2018

Mikhail Red’s mystery thriller film Birdshot has been chosen by the Film Academy of the Philippines as the country’s entry in the 2018 Academy Awards’ Foreign Language Film category.

“Fly high and proud! Birdshot’s Oscar race officially begins,” the news was confirmed by the movie’s Facebook page on Tuesday, September 26.

The movie stars Mary Joy Apostol, Ku Aquino, Arnold Reyes, and John Arcilla, who top billed Heneral Luna, the country’s entry to the Oscars last year.

Birdshot is about a young girl named Maya who accidentally kills an endangered Philippine eagle. Meanwhile, authorities started to investigate the disappearance of a group of farmers in a bus but was ordered to find the killer of the eagle instead.

The film won Best Asian Future Film at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2016 and was given the Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award at the Goteborg Film Festival.

Birdshot has been screened in 15 international film festivals before making its local debut being at the 13th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and the 2017 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino.
