Pinoy engineer hits it big in Abu Dhabi

Did you know that the project manager and team leader of two of the biggest infrastructure projects in Abu Dhabi is a Filipino?

Jeffrey Uy, one of two recipients of TFT Awards Engineer of the Year for 2017, is a mechanical engineer and is currently with construction giant, Jacobs International as project manager. He was chosen for the position owing to his 14 years of extensive professional experience from construction and facilities management focusing in the areas of building and infrastructure services and his 11 years of Middle East experience managing projects.

“I was assigned to work in the Yas Mall Project, the largest mall in Abu Dhabi, managing electro-mechanical system of the building, including infrastructure works from start to finish which I successfully delivered on a timely manner.

Two of his greatest professional achievements so far are the Shams Abu Dhabi Development in Reem Island, which features modern mixed used towers –primarily residential towers with supporting roads and open space facilities as well as community facilities, hotels, retail, office and serviced apartments; and Yas Island Wet Utilities, a multi-billion-dollar project with a total land area of 25 million square meters.

“I was assigned to work in the Yas Mall Project, the largest mall in Abu Dhabi, managing electro-mechanical system of the building, including infrastructure works from start to finish which I successfully delivered on a timely manner. It also includes setting up project procedures to ensure proper execution of the works,” Uy said.

“With my nature of work, I was exposed to working with a team having a multi-cultural background. Bearing in mind that I’m the only Filipino working with the Jacobs team. As a Filipino engineer, I’m proud to be part of the Project Management Team,” he added.

Before his stints in Abu Dhabi, Uy was a mechanical engineer at Taisei Corp.’s Dubai branch, involved in the Palm Jumeirah Gateway Towers project, dubbed as one of the eight wonders of the world.

“I was offered a position to work in Taisei Corp.’s  Abu Dhabi branch, where I was assigned to as team leader for the interim operation and maintenance of infrastructure utilities in Yas Island, managing a group of engineers and skilled workforce,” he said.

Uy is also very involved with the Filipino community in Abu Dhabi, being current chairman of the Bayanihan Council, which oversees  voluntary work of accredited Filipino organizations and individuals in capital emirate, as well as in Al Ain and the Western Region under the auspices of the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

Already a degree holder of Master of Science in Construction Management,  Uy is currently taking up a Master’s degree in Business Administration.
