Tired of being an employee all your life? Level up, then.

Last October 6 and 7, some 300 Filipinos from across the emirates were privileged to listen to three financial and business gurus from the Philippines – Armando “Mr. B” Bartolome, dubbed as the Philippines’ “franchise guru;” Jose Feron “Dodong” Cacanando, farmer-businessman turned author and inspirational speaker; and Paulo Tibig, EntreChamp motivational speaker and bestselling author and media resource person.

“Number one takot (fear).  Second, tsamba (chance).  Most Pinoys want to make fast money even if by chance. Trabaho (job). Nothing wrong with that. But if you will stick to that motivation,  you cannot remove the mindset that you’re only as good as being an employee. Tamad (lazy). There was never a successful businessperson who was lazy.

The three took turns talking about how to move up from being an ordinary employee to a successful entrepreneur, at Entrep Summit 2017 held at the Emirates Aviation College auditorium organized by Money Talks and Innovate Create Events (ICE).

During his talk, Bartolome told  the audience that to be a successful businessperson, one must create ideas, act on it right away and not be held back by the financial concerns.

“Don’t think about the money yet,” said Bartolome.  “The funding will come. I always tell people, the most (difficult) part is when you are hit with a “walang pera (no money) mentality.”

“Paint your idea like a painter. Then, sell your idea to others who have the funding. I believe opportunities just come. It won’t stop,” Bartolome added.

Cacanando, for his part, encouraged  OFWs to do business in agriculture. He said, “Many people don’t profit in agriculture kasi they don’t see it as a business. Yung farming to them is just an option. To me, it’s not an option. I see it as a main source of profit. Maraming kakain (People will always eat). Experts project our population to grow until 2030. So there’s a big opportunity. So why give it to someone else by exporting agri-products?”

Probably the most interesting was that of Tibig’s who said Pinoys have to let go of the “4Ts” to be able to move out from being ordinary employees and become successful businesspeople.

“The right foundation starts really with tamang (the right) mindset to change what I call the 4Ts,” Tibig said.

“Number one: takot. Natatakot tayo to venture into business when we shouldn’t. And key lang dun eh dapat prepared ka. Pangalawa, tsamba. Most Pinoys gusto nila madaling kita na naisasaalang-alang sa tsamba. Trabaho. Nothing wrong with that. But if you will stick to that motivation, di mo matatanggal ang mind-set na hanggang employment ka lang. Tamad. Wala tayong nakitang successful na negosyante, maliit man o malaki, na tamad o tinamad,” he said.
